What you need to know to be prepared and ready to nail your next health and fitness goals!
When it comes to picking a health and fitness program, preparation is key. You don't need to be ready, but you need, and will want to be, prepared. Having a good plan in place allows you to avoid surprises, minimize stress, avoid a last minute rush and keep the stress levels down. If you head into a program without feeling rushed or stressed, it increases your chances of loving the program, sticking with the exercises and maximizing results!
1) The most important preparation you can do is come up with your goals, your why. It doesn't need to be anything formal if you don't want, but the more energy and effort you put into this step, the better. Think SMART. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time oriented. Here are a couple of examples to guide you:
Not SMART- I want to lose weight
Not SMART- I want to lose 30lbs in 2 weeks.
SMART- I would like to lose 10lbs in the next six weeks (before my friends wedding).
2) Now this step is super important and can take a little time to do it right, research. Now that you have your goals, you want to make sure you are matching the goals to a program/trainer that can help you reach them. If you would like to heal a Diastasis Recti, jumping into something built by a trainer with no experience or credentials for pregnant and postpartum women and selling it as high intensity, is probably not going to help you. When you are doing your research, have your goal next to you and visible. Line up the program and your goals so you can have maximum success.
3) Start adding positivity before you start the program. In other words, you will want to start taking steps toward accomplishing your goal now. Before you hit "buy" or even after you sign up for a program, explore the website, join the groups and read the emails or blogs. See what people are saying about the program, find out what tips and tricks the program creator offers and start them now! Also, implement things like eating more vegetables, drinking more water and getting more sleep. You know these things already and they only benefit you before making the leap!
4) Be open minded. Understand that it might be new or different, maybe you have never done an online program before, cool! Embrace it! Get excited! If you are nervous, reach out. Find the email for the creator, voice your concerns or join any groups they offer and ask other moms! We can help!
5) Be vulnerable. The more honest you can be, out loud, the better. As a trainer, I have the most success with clients when they are transparent, honest and vulnerable. The more you can share and more we can really talk, the better I can assist you. Be honest in the groups, don't hold back. I can almost guarantee someone else has gone through exactly what you have or similar.
6) Before you begin a program, start practicing holding yourself accountable. We talked about setting goals, doing the research, being open minded and vulnerable. Write it all down. Each one can be written in different ways. Write your goals down so they are visible to you every single day. Have a pro/con list for your research. Start writing down your thoughts, concerns, goals in groups, with the program creator or even your spouse/friends/family. By writing it down, you are bringing it life and by sharing it, you have one more reason to do.
7) Some other tips I like to share that need less explanation and are simply just helpful; Find a buddy to do it with you, buy new workout clothes, buy new workout shoes, hype yourself up!
