Pelvic Floor 101: What Every Mom Needs to Know

Discover the basics of your pelvic floor and why it’s essential for postpartum health and wellness.

Welcome to the first installment of our Pelvic Floor Essentials series!

Whether you’re pregnant, postpartum, or just looking to understand your body better, knowing about your pelvic floor is crucial. This week, we’re diving into the basics to help you understand what the pelvic floor is, its functions, and why it’s so important for moms.

What is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and tissues located at the base of your pelvis. These muscles stretch like a hammock from the tailbone (coccyx) at the back to the pubic bone in front. They support the pelvic organs, including the bladder, uterus, and rectum, and play a key role in bladder and bowel control, as well as sexual function.

Functions of the Pelvic Floor:

  1. Support: The pelvic floor muscles support the weight of your pelvic organs.
  2. Control: They help control the release of urine, feces, and gas.
  3. Stability: They assist in stabilizing your core and spine.
  4. Sexual Function: These muscles are involved in sexual sensation and function.

Common Pelvic Floor Issues:

Many women experience pelvic floor problems, especially during and after pregnancy. Common issues include:

  • Incontinence: Leakage of urine or feces.
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse: When pelvic organs drop due to weakened support.
  • Pelvic Pain: Discomfort or pain in the pelvic region.
  • Low Back or Hip Pain: Discomfort or pain due to tight or weak pelvic floor muscles
  • Poor/Different Posture: Rounded shoulders, tucked/“missing” butt, hyperextension on joints and other such changes.

Why is Pelvic Floor Health Important for Moms?

Pregnancy and childbirth put a lot of strain on the pelvic floor. Ensuring these muscles are strong and functional can help prevent or manage issues like incontinence and prolapse. It also aids in a smoother recovery postpartum.

Understanding your pelvic floor is the first step in taking control of your health.
